While carrying your passport when you dock at an island may not be necessary, best to have it with you, or at least a photocopy of it. A photocopy of your birth certificate and other ID will normally do, especially for American citizens. Some tourists totally forget to photocopy their passports and end up losing their original to some local petty thieves.
