More than 50 years ago, racism was rampant. It was a social ill that affected lots of people, particularly the darker-skinned individuals. There were reforms done, but even as you can amend the laws, you can’t change the mindset of people just like that. For example, the 1960s didn’t allow an African-American woman to enter the Miss America Pageant, that in 1968, a Miss Black America Pageant was held to protest the discrimination. It took 2 years before an African-American woman won a state title in Miss America. Even within the African-American community, lighter skin was considered more attractive. Proof that it takes time to change the mindset of people is the fact that up to this day, racism exists in some places in the USA.
