While smoking was deemed attractive over 50 years ago, drinking was not. While men indulged in alcohol drinking as a means of bonding, females who drank were perceived to be unfeminine. Worse, most women drinkers were viewed as having problems. The double standard was in effect, where men who were heavy drinkers were manly and respected, but women drinkers were uncouth and problematic. Especially if a woman drank more than what was expected of her. A glass of wine or a beer may have been accepted, but more than that would have raised eyebrows. It was unfair, but that was life back then.
