The popularity of the mini-skirt meant that more legs would be seen. And the more attractive a woman’s legs were, the more gorgeous she would appear to men. So, by the mid 1960s, a new trend was born – leg makeup. While leg makeup has been used since World War II, it was used for a much different reason. At that time, it was normal to use leg stockings, it was the decent thing to do. A shortage of stockings made some women improvise. They would draw stocking seams with an eyeliner to make it look like their legs were not bare. The 1960s saw leg makeup as a means of adornment, or to hide blemishes and scars that would not be visible using a normal length skirt. Whatever reason a woman chose to use leg makeup, it was to conform to prevailing beauty norms. So even while the women’s liberation movement was picking up popularity, some women still felt the need to conform to society’s beauty standards.
