When women decided to mimic fashion normally meant for men, the unisex era had arrived. Androgyny became associated again with the freedom to choose, and reject stereotype femininity. At first females tried sporting short hair like most men, wearing shirts and coats that men traditionally wore, trousers, and so on. But fashion designers decided to cash in on the trend, and made clothing lines that both men and women could wear. It was part of the struggle for equality, at least for most women then. Of course, some women simply preferred to be men, and this was the opportunity for them.
