How common does an ovarian cyst develop in women? According to records, ovarian cysts are so common in women that most of the time they do not even know they have it. They do not experience any symptoms or discomfort. Most cysts develop on a monthly basis as part of a woman’s menstrual cycle. These cysts are called functional ovarian cysts. Most of these cysts are usually benign. Only in rare cases does an ovarian cyst become malignant. Malignant or cancerous cysts are more frequent and more common in women who have been through menopause.
