Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

Probably one of the first female actresses to completely live her character both on and off TV, Elvira was known as the Mistress of the Dark. The actress who played Elvira, Cassandra Peterson, has had a love of the horror genre since she was a young girl. She did share thought, that the beginning, it really did scare her. She explained, “My first entrée into horror was my cousin Danny taking me downtown to the Chief Theatre in Colorado Springs to see The House On Haunted Hill starring Vincent Price. I had a love/hate obsession with the movie and with Vincent Price. I was in second or third grade and I came home from that movie and had nightmares every night for a month. But at the same time, I was obsessed with it.”
