Before people learned just how harmful cigarettes and nicotine are to the lungs, smoking cigarettes was definitely America’s favorite past time. And apparently, back in the day, cigarette companies believed that advertising a half-naked woman holding a violin and being offered what was once called a “fag” would make more people want to buy them. Admittedly, they weren’t that wrong were they? Even if they girl in the photo had nothing to do with cigarette smoking, the ad surely got tons of attention and positive association with smoking, just as planned. It seems that the old adage “sex sells” worked just as well then as it does now.
