Symptoms Of Fatty Liver Disease

A healthy liver normally contains minimal fat content, but a liver becomes unhealthy when too much fat builds up in liver cells and more than 5% of the organ is fat. You can get fatty liver disease when there’s excess fat in your liver, causing it to swell and become inflamed. Liver inflammation can lead to scarring which can cause permanent damage to your liver. There are two types of fatty liver disease, namely alcoholic fatty liver disease which results from long-term alcohol abuse and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease which is typically caused by a high-fat diet, although other factors may play a role in some cases.
You may not notice any symptoms of alcoholic fatty liver disease in its early stages except for some pain in the right side of your abdomen. As the disease progresses, you may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. Likewise, you may also not have symptoms in the early stages of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, but over time, it can cause jaundice, itchy skin, swollen abdomen and legs, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, general weakness, and fatigue.
