Symptoms Of Genetic Conditions That Can Lead To Liver Problems

Jillcarnahan

Some hereditary genetic disorders play a part in the development of liver disease. The most common genetic conditions that can cause liver problems are:
  • Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a condition where your body doesn’t produce enough alpha-1 antitrypsin, leading to liver disease, liver failure, and in some cases, liver cancer. It’s the most common genetic cause of liver disease among children. Its symptoms include jaundice, swelling in the abdomen and lower extremities, and loss of appetite.
  • Hemochromatosis, a condition that causes your body to absorb too much iron from food and store excess iron in your organs, especially your liver, pancreas, and heart. Its symptoms include pain in the knuckles (iron fist), abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, lethargy and weakness, abnormal skin coloring (gray or bronze skin), hair loss, heart palpitations, poor sex drive, and mental fog.
