Symptoms Of Alcohol-Related Liver Disease

Medical News Today

You can develop alcoholic liver disease from the heavy consumption of alcohol over many years. Long-term alcohol abuse can lead to fat build-up, inflammation, and scarring of the liver. It’s easy to inadvertently dismiss the early symptoms of alcoholic liver disease as the effects of a stomach flu since they typically include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and a general feeling of discomfort and weakness.
However, if you ignore these symptoms and leave them undiagnosed and untreated while continuing to drink alcohol in excess, they may lead to a faster progression of the disease, with later-stage signs that are easier to recognize. The more distinctive symptoms of advanced liver disease include jaundice, extremely itchy skin, ascites or swelling in the abdomen, edema in the lower extremities, fever and chills, significant weight loss, muscle atrophy, fingernail clubbing, blood in vomit, blood in the stool, tendency to bleed and bruise easily, and sensitivity to alcohol and drugs.
