After checking your health history and a thorough physical examination, your doctor may recommend a series of tests to identify the cause and extent of liver damage. These may include liver function tests to diagnose the liver disease, other blood tests to look for specific liver problems or genetic disorders, imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan or MRI scan to show the extent of liver damage, and a biopsy to help look for signs of liver damage and diagnose the liver disease.

Management and treatment of liver disease largely depends on the diagnosis. Alcohol-related liver disease can be treated with lifestyle modifications, such as cessation of alcohol consumption, and careful monitoring of liver function. Other liver problems may be managed with medications or may require surgery and a liver transplant. Severe liver disease that has led to liver failure requires surgery where the medical team will either try to save the portion of the liver that still works or proceed with a liver transplant.
