Muhammad Ali (1942 – 2016)

Born Cassius Clay, Ali was known as one of the greatest boxers of all time (the greatest according to him). He started boxing at the young age of 12. At 18, he won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division of the 1960 Summer Olympics. He turned professional a year later, and converted to Islam after 1961 and took the name Muhammad Ali. In 1964, he took the heavyweight belt from Sonny Liston in a shocking upset. The rest is history. But sadly, the legendary boxer passed away on June 3, 2016, at the age of 74. His death was the number one trending topic on Twitter for over 12 hours, and on Facebook for several days. Numerous news networks featured the boxer for several hours as part of the tribute given to the legend. He was mourned all over the world, and as a family spokesman said the family “ certainly believes that Muhammad Ali was a citizen of the world and they know that the world grieves with him.”
