Second Stage: Clinical Latency Symptoms

When your immune system loses the battle with HIV, the flu-like symptoms will disappear. This can mistakenly be perceived as a good sign, but there is a lot going on. This is what doctors call the asymptomatic period, or chronic HIV infection. In your body, CD4 cells coordinate the response of your immune system. Untreated HIV will kill the CD4 cells and destroy the immune system. Doctors can check how many of these cells you have with blood tests. As CD4 cells drop, you are more likely to be susceptible to other infections. Most people don’t have symptoms they can see or feel. They may unwittingly pass on the HIV to others. Medication with Antiretroviral Therapy drugs (ART) may make you stay in this stage for decades, there is no cure for HIV. The medications will help improve your life substantially though.
