The Ukrainian-American businesswoman, Julie Smolyansky, became the youngest female CEO of a publicly traded firm when she, at age 27, took over Illinois-based dairy company Lifeway Foods in 2002. Her father, Michael Smolyansky, who relocated his family from Kyiv to the United States, founded Lifeway Foods in 1986. Julie Smolyansky joined the family business in 1997, and when her father unfortunately died of a heart attack in 2002, she along with her brother who was the CFO, had to take the reins. Since the young Smolyansky had assumed the role, she continued the company’s strong performance, increased its growth with creative marketing and product development, brought Eastern European products to the US market, expanded their product distribution throughout the country as well as to other areas around the globe, and boosted Lifeway Foods’ annual revenue from the $12 million when she started to $130 million in 2015. Smolyansky has been included in Fortune’s 40 under 40 list, Fortune’s 55 Most Influential Women on Twitter, and Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business.
