Many of us know Desirée Glapion Rogers as the former White House Social Secretary for President Barack Obama’s office, but prior to her time at the White House, the glamorous American businesswoman had an extensive career in different industries. After graduating with a degree in political science from Wellesley College and getting her MBA from Harvard Business School, Rogers landed her first job with the world’s largest telecommunications company, AT&T. Rogers has worn many hats over the past three decades, including managing the Illinois State Lottery, leading at an executive role at Peoples Energy, and being hired as chief executive officer of Johnson Publishing Company. All these leadership roles led to her position at the White House where she was responsible for executing the president’s vision and turning the US president’s residence and workplace into “the people’s house.” After the White House, Rogers served as the chair of the board of Choose Chicago till 2019, and in June of the same year, she and former colleague Cheryl Mayberry McKissack acquired Black Opal Cosmetics, a brand known for its skincare line and products designed for women of color.
