Another amazing creator of an online learning program is Cindy Mi, the founder and CEO of VIPKid which connects students in China with teachers in the United States and Canada to learn English. The ingenious high school dropout had a vision; Mi wanted a global classroom that would empower students and teachers through customizable learning and a connection of cultures across countries. Mi believes that education should not be a rigid one-size-fits-all curriculum. Instead, she recognizes that all students around the globe are unique and should have the opportunity to connect with great educators who can offer personalized learning while sparking interest to learn more. Mi grew up inherently interested in learning and after a terrible experience with a teacher from her school, she became determined to become an effective educator who would inspire children to love learning. She taught herself English, started tutoring other students at age 15, dropped out of high school two years later, co-founded ABC English with her uncle, got an MBA in China then attended a graduate school in the US as an exchange student. Inspired and motivated with what she saw and learned from Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management, she soon established VIPKid in 2013, which became one of China’s leading education startups.
