When planning a trip to Switzerland, it is best to know what cash to bring to avoid unnecessary inconvenience.  Although it is located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is not a member of the European Union.  Thus, it does not use the common Euro currency, preferring its own Swiss franc to transact exchange of products and services.  The Swiss franc is the only official currency in Switzerland and the franc is the only currency accepted everywhere.  It is important to note that the Euro is a foreign currency in Switzerland so accepting it results in extra costs and risks for shop owners.  Thus, if you pay in Euro, change will be in Swiss francs and the exchange rate is mostly not in your favor.  If you plan to stay longer, it is cheaper and more convenient to have Swiss francs at hand.
