Get Confused with Words

Remember, “Swiss” in not a language.  Instead, Switzerland has four national languages namely German, French, Italian, and Romansh.  If you are travelling around the country, what greeting to use can get confusing.  The majority of the country speaks Swiss German.  While many Swiss are bi-lingual do not assume that the French-speaking population can speak German and vice versa.  Some areas such as Bern, Valais, and Fribourg, are officially bilingual between French and German, and the province of Grisons is even recognized as being trilingual — with Italian, German and Romansh designated as official languages. However, regardless of the area of Switzerland you find yourself in, you do not need to look too hard to find examples of the country’s multilingual identity.
