As a traveler, being aware of what the Swiss consider to be polite behavior will help you feel more comfortable.  So, when meeting a local for the first time, remember that handshakes should be firm with eye contact.  Of course, an engaging smile will certainly endear you to the Swiss.  Establishing good eye contact is a sign of self-confidence and honesty.  If you avoid to look into the eyes of someone it can mean several things such as having something to hide, low self-esteem, or you are just simply disrespectful.  Eye contact and facial expressions provide important social and emotional information. When in Switzerland, the locals will appreciate you more if you are sincere and engage with them eye to eye.
