It is not uncommon to see beggars and children asking for money on the streets of Brazil. While it is distressing to witness others in such poverty and difficult situations, giving them money will not help the situation. Unfortunately, most of the people and children begging become dependent on others when money is just handed to them. A lot of them may use your cash to buy drugs or get involved in illicit activities, which is why you won’t catch many locals giving them money. If your heart is going out to them and you really want to do something to help, giving food instead of money is a much better idea and will take care of their immediate need for sustenance.
