Don’t Do Or Buy Illegal Drugs

This friendly reminder might seem like your usual travel advice, but it’s best to take it seriously in Brazil. Stay safe and don’t seek out illegal drugs. Besides the great possibility of getting caught by the Brazilian police, you don’t want to get mixed up with the wrong crowd. Many of the drug dealers in Brazil are part of gangs that hide in some of the favelas (remember our tip about not wandering around the favelas alone!). While the drug laws in Brazil were recently updated—educational classes and community service are now penalties for those in possession of illegal drugs—you still don’t want to get into trouble. For those involved in drug trafficking, the penalties are much more severe, such as a long prison sentence.
