Brazil’s crowded and colorful favelas look interesting to explore, but doing so on your own is never a good idea. While there are some favelas that are safe to visit, such as Vidigal in Rio de Janeiro, it’s important that you ask the locals for advice first when it comes to moving around their city. Visiting tourist centers to get information and to learn about where is safe for travelers is a must when you’re new to the country. Most favelas, where many underprivileged or low-income Brazilians reside, are not recommended for tourists’ visits. Many favelas are run by powerful and illegal drug gangs in Brazil, and you definitely don’t want to get into any sort of trouble while you’re on holiday! One travel tip: if you’re driving around Brazil in a hired car, make sure you check the maps carefully so you can avoid driving into and getting lost around favelas. When in doubt, ask some friendly locals for assistance.
