Hawaii was the site of the world’s first commercial macadamia nut farm. Currently, Hawaii has more than 700 macadamia nut farms and 8 processing plants. The industry employs some 3,000 workers statewide. Hawaii is the top producer of macadamia in the US. However, the world-famous Hawaiian macadamia nut is not actually native to Hawaii. William H. Purvis, a sugar plantation manager, introduced the macadamia to Hawaii in the late 1800’s. It was first imported from Australia as decorative vegetation back in the 1880s. It was in the 1920s, that the macadamia nut  officially became a harvest crop for the state.
