Hawaii has several sacred sites. One such site is the Pu`u Loa Petroglyphs, it is located 16 miles from the rim of Kilauea, it is Hawaii’s largest field of petroglyphs. A petroglyph is a stone carving, picking, abrading or incising, as a form of rock art. The archaeological site of Pu`u Loa contains over 23,000 petroglyph images. Some of which are dated geologically between AD 1200-1450. Like in any destinations rich with cultural heritage, respect is crucial. It is best to show respect when visiting any site that Hawaiian people consider to be sacred such as a temple or any rock wall decorated with petroglyphs or carvings created by ancient Hawaiians. Walk and speak softly in these sacred places and do not leave trash behind.
