Call Everyone Hawaiian

When visiting Hawaii, please be mindful that only people with Hawaiian ancestry are considered to be Hawaiians. Those who were born and raised in Hawaii are not considered to be a true Hawaiian, unless they have Hawaiian ancestry in their family. Native Hawaiians (Hawaiian: kānaka ʻōiwi, kānaka maoli and Hawaiʻi maoli) are the Aboriginal Polynesian people of the Hawaiian Islands or their descendants. Therefore, people who do not come from Hawaiian ancestry refer to themselves as simply locals. To make it easy, it would be best to call everyone a local. Native Hawaiians are also locals; however, not all locals may be Hawaiian. It would also be best to avoid calling anyone a native as well. As a fun fact, based on the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) released by the US Census, Native Hawaiians comprise only 10.03% of Hawaii’s population.
