Everyone loves to bring home memorabilia from a place they have visited. In Hawaii, it is going to be very tempting to take home a small lava rock or a jar-full of black, red, or white sand. However, please do not. It is actually against the law to remove objects from a national park. But apart from being illegal, legend has it, whoever takes volcanic rock or any other objects will be haunted by Pele’s curse. Because of this, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park station and other local post offices receive thousands of pounds of mail often addressed to Queen Pele. According to Hawaiian mythology, Pele also known as the goddess Pelehonuamea, is the mistress of volcanoes and the very fire and magma that created the islands. Also, the sand in Hawaii is a finite resource so it is best to leave them there.
