Bring a Small Gift

One of the best ways to enjoy a destination is to immerse into the culture. If you are invited to the home of a Hawaiian person, it is customary to take with you a small gift.  Giving a makana or omiyage (gift), is a long time Hawaiian tradition. It is a practice many kama‘āina (Hawaii resident, regardless of ancestry) have adopted, even those not of Japanese descent. Giving omiyage is an expression of aloha, a way of showing gratitude and goodwill. Some people choose to bring a small food dish, such as a dessert, when attending a small gathering. Your small gesture will be highly appreciated by Hawaiian residents. The gift does not necessarily have to be something valuable, it would be best if the gift is something that the recipient would enjoy.
