Keep Your Shoes on When Entering a Home

Hawaii has a large population of Asian descent and it has become common courtesy to remove one’s shoes when entering a person’s home in Hawaii.  It is considered very rude to leave your shoes on, unless your host tells you that there is no need to remove your shoes when entering their home. It is an important custom to keep in mind; which is why signs that spell out: “Please remove your shoes. Mahalo!” are pretty popular in local craft fairs. It is best to be prepared about this custom when planning to visit Hawaii especially when you get invited by a local or a Hawaiian. It shows respect to the host by keeping their home clean and not bringing dirt and germs into their home. Many homes will have a place to keep the shoes, right by the door.
