Do not bring plastics bags to Hawaii. It was the first state to ban plastic bags. In July 1, 2015, Oahu, the most populated Hawaiian island, joined the other islands in banning plastic bags from their stores. Ordinance 12-8 prohibited businesses from providing plastic checkout bags and non-recyclable paper bags to their customers at the point of sale for the purpose of transporting groceries or other merchandise. Establishments that do not follow this ordinance will be “Subject to a civil fine of not less than $100 nor more than $1 ,000 for each day of violation.” This ordinance made Hawaii the first state to fully ban the use of single use plastic bags. There are however some “acceptable bags” as mentioned in Ordinance 17-37, “compostable plastic bag”, recyclable paper bag”, and “reusable bag”. BYOB (Bringing Your Own reusable Bag) stickers are common place in local stores. This is to remind customers to save money and resources by Bringing Your Own reusable Bag when shopping around Hawaii.
