Over Speed

For first time visitors, you will be amazed to see that in some places in Hawaii, there are no buildings that are taller than palm trees. For instance, in Kauai, buildings that are taller than a palm tree are regulated by law. There are no cities, no free-ways, chain restaurants, towering hotels and very few mainstream stores. The beauty and tranquility of nature is preserved. Also, the maximum speed limit on the entire island is only 50 mph! To be more specific, speed limits are usually 25 to 30 mph in certain residential streets, and 35 to 45 mph in certain urban arterial roads. All other interstates have a maximum speed limit of 55 mph with the limit dropping to 50 mph in central Honolulu. However, the speed limit on a few miles of Interstates H-1 and H-3 (between H-1 exits 2 and 5, and on H-3 in the Halawa Valley west of the trans-Koolau tunnels) increased to 60 mph in May 2002. First time offenders face fines of $500 to $1,000, a 30-day license suspension, mandatory driver’s education and either 36 hours of community service or two to five days in prison. So, do not dare to over speed.
