For first time tourists, please know that snakes are not considered as pets and should not be purchased as pets. Doing such is outlawed in Hawaii. People caught with pet snakes in Hawaii face up to 3 years in jail and $200,000 in fines. The only snakes that are legally allowed to be kept in Hawaii are those showcased in zoos. The reason why it is illegal to have pet snakes in Hawaii is because snakes are an invasive species. Without any natural predators, they compete with the native animal populations for food and habitat, and many snake species prey on birds and their eggs, increasing the threat to Hawaii’s many endangered native birds. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture even recently imported four brown tree snakes in order to train dogs to hunt for them. These dogs, once trained will hunt for the snakes that could enter Hawaii by plane, ship or cargo carrier.
