Conjoint Marital Therapy

Among the members of an NPD patient’s family, it is the spouse that usually takes the brunt of the afflicted individual’s destructive behavior. Aside from this, the spouse also holds the key to his or her partner’s treatment success. Because of this, it is very important to involve the husband, wife or partner through Marital Therapy, which can be done conjointly (with the patient) or individually (without the patient).
Conjoint therapy aims to make partners aware of each other’s needs. By doing this, they create a realistic understanding of their other half, allowing them to become more tolerant of the other’s failure to meet their needs. Therapists help couples become more self-aware, allowing them to build mutual empathy by talking about their feelings and needs. It also prevents the cycle of “offense-defense” from snowballing, which can ultimately ruin the partnership.
