While conjoint therapy is more desired, there are times when Narcissistic Personality Disorder patients refuse to go into couple’s therapy. When this happens, therapists encourage their partners to undergo Individual Therapy.
Individual therapy teaches a partner effective ways on how to cope with their narcissistic halves. During sessions, spouses or partners of NPD patients learn how to speak assertively to their afflicted halves, something that is very important when dealing with individuals with NPD. Partners are also educated on why it is important to learn how to effectively ask their narcissistic spouses for what they want, and why boundaries need to be set on abusive behavior. Learning these builds self-esteem and reduces denial by making the partner realize their narcissistic spouse’s limitations.
