Most mental illnesses and conditions are addressed by combining therapy with medication. However, personality disorders, such as Narcissistic Personality Disorder, are known to be unresponsive to drug regimens which is why they are not given medication. There are times though when pharmaceutical agents are called for during the treatment of NPD, especially when patients have co-occurring disorders present.
Patients with NPD sometimes present with depressive symptoms and are given antidepressants to help them cope with gloomy days. When these depressive states prevent patients from going through with their regular treatment schedules, it is important that they are addressed. Examples of the drugs given to NPD patients include sertraline (Zoloft), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva, Brisdelle), and fluvoxamine (Luvox).
