Drugs that control both manic and depressive episodes are also used in the treatment of co-occurring disorders that sometimes come with NPD. These disorders may present in patients as low states and hyper-manic states, which have detrimental effects on their progress with therapy. These medications are usually a combination of an antidepressant and a mood stabilizer or antipsychotic. The combination provides a more balanced cocktail to keep both depressive and manic symptoms from surfacing.
The main reason for symptomatic treatment of co-occurring disorders in patients with NPD is to ensure that they won’t revert back to their disruptive behavior. Additionally, the prevention of symptoms from co-occurring disorders with the use of drugs protects the important gains that a patient may have achieved during therapy.
One example of such drug is Symbax, a drug that contains both the antidepressant (fluoxetine), and the antipsychotic (olanzapine).
