The violent crime rate is 1,099 per 100,000 residents. In 2016 alone, the FBI reported 653 murders committed, that’s more than the total number of New York City and Los Angeles combined. Though Chicago no longer has the highest homicide rate in the US, it has consistently had more total killings than any other US city. Though gun-related homicides have dropped in 2018, there is still a gun violence epidemic fueled by racial segregation, wealth inequality, gangs, and the inability of law enforcement to solve crimes. Chicago is flourishing economically, with a record-low unemployment rate of 3.8%, but there is still a lack of resources and opportunities in poor communities, often leading young people in these neighborhoods to turn to violence.
