The “Motor City” has consistently been in the most dangerous cities list. It is mainly due to a persistent problem of gang-related violence, murder, rape, robbery and assault. Its violent crime rate is at 2,137 per 100,000 residents. Detroit’s inner city is riskier than the suburbs, and even though Downtown Detroit is relatively safe, beware of pickpockets who prey on tourists. Detroit’s public transportation system is also not recommended, with taxis and hired cars as better and safer alternatives when making your way around the city.
