Another one of California’s popular vacation spots that received the All-American City award five times, Stockton also has high crime rates. This city claimed bankruptcy back in 2012, making it one of the more populous cities to do so. Lack of funding affected the ability to combat crime properly by limiting the resources available. In 2017, the violent crime rate was 1,415 per 100,000 residents, and poverty rate was 23.7%, with unemployment at 8% – one of the highest in the country. The aggravated assault rate in Stockton is particularly high at 916.4 per 100,000 people.
