This city is the capital of Michigan, and has over 14 homicides a year, and instead of the crime rate going down, it is increasing. The city’s violent crime rate is noticeably higher than the national average, with East Lansing and other surrounding suburbs seeing far less violent crime than Lansing proper. The FBI’s report indicates that even though the murder rate in Lansing is typically low, the city has high numbers for property crimes and sexual or physical assaults. One police chief was quoted saying that the high crime rate is due to mental illness and domestic violence.
