Baltimore, a city of firsts famous for its progressive innovations, is unfortunately also infamous for its high crime rate, with a serious violent crime rate of 2,027 per 100,000 residents. In 2017, there were 8,879 robberies, and 342 homicides – almost one per day. Poverty rate is at 23.1%, with unemployment at 6.1%. Violent crime spiked in 2015 after the death of Freddie Gray while in the custody of police, leading to several days of violent protests and an increase in murders. Baltimore, with its record of deadly gun violence, domestic abuse, rape, and other horrific crimes, is suffering with a decline in education as well as police presence.
