A tourist destination popular for its long stretch of oceanfront and boardwalk, it’s packed with visitors particularly during the summer months. Unfortunately, the annual influx of tourists made it difficult for residents as the cost of living went up tremendously, making household incomes less effective to cope, thus creating a higher crime rate. The city has a violent crime rate of 1,361 per 100,000 residents (top 10%). Even though Ashbury Park is a small seaside city with a population less than 100,000, it has a high crime because of low income, widespread poverty, weak job markets, and poor conditions.
