She is an American singer, songwriter, comedian, actress, and film producer. Her career began in several off-Broadway plays, which is an avant-garde movement of drama and theater. She eventually did Broadway, and developed her talent and popularity as a singer, with well-known hits. Her motion picture debut was in 1979 with The Rose, where she also sang in the soundtrack. She was born in Hawaii, and was one of the few Jewish families amongst a mostly Asian neighborhood. You definitely won’t recognize her in a photo of her early years.
