A nine-hole course situated in the Firestone rubber plantation in Harbel, Margibi County, the Firestone Overseas Golf Club is one of two golf courses just outside the Liberian capital of Monrovia. Since maintaining golf courses are incredibly expensive, the fairways here are treated like roughs, and the greens are referred to as “browns,” which is a combination of oil, sand, and iron ore. The Firestone plantation, considered the largest contiguous rubber plantation in the world at over 250 square miles, served as a battlefield during the civil war in the early 90s, with expats in the plantation recognizing several guerillas who worked as caddies at the golf course.
