Crossed Swords Golf Course (Baghdad, Iraq)

Nestled inside the Green Zone in Baghdad is the Crossed Swords Golf Course, the only golf course in Baghdad. Created in 2007 by a British military officer, the nine-hole course is closed in by the 15-foot concrete blast walls, and sending the ball over them means a lost ball. The greens are called browns because they’re made of dirt, and the holes are made from baked bean cans sunk into the ground. The course includes real bunkers, of course, and gunfire and helicopters passing above is a regular occurrence. The tee box in the 5th hole is located behind an actual fox hole, and players are only allowed two clubs, a putter and either a short iron or a pitching wedge.
