Lots of visitors in Australia think they have a license to use the word “mate’ freely. While it may bring some laughs from locals hearing a tourist say “mate,” remember that there are certain rules that go with it. First of all, men use the term, but women never do. Never ever say “mate” to a woman, you will most likely get slapped or punched. Most local men refer to other men as “mate” particularly if they don’t know their names. It is also a customary greeting among strangers (men only). Also, take note of some slang used in Australia – g’day is good day, cuppa is a cup of tea, coppa is a cop, footy is football, servo is the gas station, and cabbie is a taxi driver. So have a g’day mate!
