Don’t Diss Vegemite

Most people who visit Australia are naturally curious about Vegemite. Some even think it is slang for “veggie-meat,” which is understandable, but quite hilarious (especially after they try it). Vegemite is a thick dark brown Aussie food spread made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. It is salty, a bit bitter, and malty. Many claim to savor the “umami” flavour and are hooked on it. Others can’t stand the pungent smell, what more the flavour. If you want to try it, go easy on it, spread it thinly over toast. Too much and your taste buds will be overwhelmed. Remember though, Vegemite is revered like a national dish in Australia, so if it does not appeal to your taste buds, don’t diss it.
