Never Think All Aussies Have Convicts For Ancestors

Most of us are aware that historically, Australia was once a penal colony of Britain where some 160,000 convicts back in the 18th and 19th century were deported to. But not many current Aussies can trace their roots back to these “settlers,” only about 22% of the population can. So, the majority don’t have convicts as ancestors, given that there are a lot of aboriginal tribes and immigrants that comprise the population. And it is not something to even joke about, most of the convicts then were not murderers or rapists. Most were actually poor folks convicted of petty theft and minor infractions. While some may take pride in their “tough” heritage, most will not take it from a foreigner, so watch out.
