Don’t Think The Name Is Really Bora Bora

Although it is known worldwide as Bora Bora, French Polynesia or Tahiti’s most famous island, don’t think that the actual name of the island, at least for the natives, is Bora Bora. This is because there is no letter “B” in Tahitian, and as such, the locals pronounce the name of their island as “Pora Pora,” which means “first born.” It is only called Bora Bora now because the earliest European settlers who visited the island didn’t hear the locals correctly and thought that the island is called Bora Bora, and that is what the island has come to be known to the outside world.
