Chinese are not used to hugs and kisses from strangers they just met. It is not part of their customary greeting. They prefer to bow or a wave of the hand rather than shaking hands, surely an attempt to kiss or hug will shock them. Verbal greetings are the custom and is widely accepted. Particularly with a smile, it will put the person you are greeting at ease. Also take note that touching someone’s head is a no-no as well. Just like most Asian countries, the head is the most sacred part of the body and should always be respected. Most Westerners often commit the mistake of patting the head as a gesture of friendship. Mind you, not in China. It may take time to get used to, but remember that Chinese have their beliefs and traditions. Just respect them, follow the rules, and you will be fine.
